DX Shipments Are in 2 Mailings

If you are a non-US builder, please note that Ensemble kit shipments to DX locations are done in two mailings:

  1. The first mailing includes the circuit board, ICs and capacitors.
  2. The second mailing includes the resistors, connectors, cores/wire, and hardware.
  3. Ferrites

    The kit is furnished with a sufficient variety of toroids to enable the builder to build it for any one of the four major "bands". The correct count of ferrites (toroids and binocular cores is as follows:

    Note that the binocular cores are of two different types (type 43 and type 61). They have NO distinguishing markings and come in the kit in two separate bags. To be safe, you should decide which type to mark and then place an identifying marking (or piece of tape) on the binocular cores of the selected type just in case the cores get mixed up. Once they are out of their bags, you can easily get them mixed up!.

    Note also that the one 100k 1/6W 5% resistor is called for (it is R-Test in the TX OpAmps stage) in performing a test and is NOT included with the kit.

    (The SUB-BOMs include the components for applicble, external lowpass filters. A Lowpass filter is needed if you intend to operate in:

    • The 80m band after building the 80m/40m option
    • The 40m band after building the 40m/30m/20m option
    • The 30m band after building the 30m/20m/17m option

    There has been considerable discussion on the Softrock40 Group concerning matching of the BS170s to be used in the PA Stage as Q7 abd Q8, The data sheet for the BS170 shows a very wide tolerance for the Gate Threshold Voltage. It seems in most cases this is fairly tightly controlled but some vary from "typical" while still being well within the actual specification. Some randomly selected ones have given variations Tony considers excessive.. Alan, G4ZFQ, has summarized the design of a simple test circuit you might want to consider using in selecting the best matched pair of BS170s out of the batch provided in the kit.
